Lake Kerkini
Pelicans, water buffalo and a landscape that looks more like Africa than Macedonia.
The drive
Kerkini is a man-made lake and one of Europe's most important wetlands: over 300 bird species, Dalmatian pelicans all year round, herds of water buffalo on the banks. Boat trips leave from Kerkinitis and Chrysochorafa. A perfect early-morning day trip for photography.
What to watch out for
- Set off before sunrise — that is when the light and the birds are
- Some of the lakeside roads are unsurfaced
- Book the boat trip a day ahead
